When Bonaparte left Egypt, he left the command to Kléber. This one tries to negotiate with the English and the Ottomans the return of the army of the East in France but the massacre of the garrison of El-Arich puts an end to the negotiations. On March 20, 1800, French soldiers confront and defeat the Ottoman army of Youssef-Pasha around the ruins of Heliopolis. They must then carry out a siege of nearly a month to reoccupy Cairo which had entered into rebellion. After this fight, Egypt experienced a period of peace that would be interrupted by the assassination of Kleber by a Muslim fanatic and his replacement by the poor General Menou.
