In 1861, Napoleon III organized the expedition to Mexico which brought Emperor Maximilian of Austria and his wife Charlotte of Belgium to power. Despite its neutrality, Belgium decided to form a legion of volunteers who were to serve as the Empress’s guards in Mexico City. Supported by newspapers of the time, this first volume tells the story of the enlistment of this legion and the journey to distant Mexico City of young people, most of whom had never left their towns.
